Team AIB Racing win 3rd Place at F1 in Schools World Finals!

What a journey it has been. After four days of intense competition our efforts were rewarded as we finished our F1 in Schools journey with a place on the podium in Singapore, after amassing a grand total of 808 points from 1000 in the judging process.

The team was also awarded the Toro Rosso Pit Display Award for amassing the most points in the Pit Display section after an intense, creative effort from the team to leave a good impression on the judging team.

After a strong showing in the reaction racing section, the team qualified as seed number 7 for the Knockout Cup competition – reaching the quarter finals, where we narrowly missed out on a semi-final place by just 0.002 seconds. These performances on the track were backed up with a well rehearsed verbal presentation to a panel of three judges, a very enjoyable engineering judging session, pit display judging and finally our scrutineer’s report, in which we passed all critical regulations.

The World Finals Gala Dinner was held in the ballroom of the Resorts World Sentosa, where there was success from early on for Team AIB – Team Manager Aaron Hannon was selected as one of the first 11 candidates to participate in the all new Randstad Williams Engineering Academy, a new initiative which seeks to bring the world’s best young engineers into F1.

The team, upon our return to Ireland, were greeted with a fantastic reception in St. Muredach’s College where we demonstrated our car design in action using the test facilities at the college to a large audience which assembled for a great night of celebrations.

The team has since continued to promote Science and Technology in the west of Ireland, most notably linking up with main sponsors Mayo.ie to bring F1 in Schools to the Science in Action Open Day in GMIT as part of Science Week in mid-November. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to each and every one of our cohort of over 70 sponsors, with a special thanks to Mayo.ie, Mondello Park, ESB International, AIB, and Attik Designs. Furthermore we would like to thank our parents for all of the hard work which they put in, our school and teaching staff for their support and understanding, and the local community for gathering behind us and making this journey possible. The team also wishes to thank the Irish Computer Society for their help and wishes them every success with the 2015-16 F1 in Schools season!

Each team member has spent the last few months settling back into normality and adjusting to the demands of school life once more. Marketing Manager Robert Grimes added to the team’s list of successes lately, securing a work experience placement with Sahari Force India for summer 2016. Each member of the team is looking forward to remaining involved in the competition this year in some capacity, and we are already excited by the standard of competition visible so far.
